LED Street Lighting

LED Street lighting is the most advanced street lighting technology out there in the market. Traditional Street lights e.g. Sodium/mercury in all over the world consume a lot of electricity and their maintenance cost is also huge, as there life span is very shorter than LED technology.

Life span of LED light is 50,000 hours this means that their estimated life for 12 hours daily use will be more than 11 years. LED street light uses LED’s either in the form of chip-on-board(COB) or surface-mounted LED Devices(SMD) which is further controlled by a Low voltage DC output driver. LED street light fixture is also known as integrated fixture, as the LED’s are directly integrated with highly efficient heat sinks which save LED chips from overheating. Heat sinks used for LED lighting are same as that used for cooling other electronic components. These heat sinks are very special as they are made with aluminium and have several fins for dissipating the heat by air crossings. The heat sink maintains the life of LED’s by cooling it or in other words the good the heat sink is the better LED’s will perform. Using LED’s for street lighting technology is very advantageous as they can be designed into various beam angles which can be further controlled by different types of lens emitting light at various beam angles. This lens is mostly placed above the head of LED chip inside the fixture.Thus, by using different types of Lenses we can design LED street lights of various types and for various requirements depending on the width of the road or the area needed to be illuminated. When LED lighting is compared to traditional lighting technology, which uses a reflector on the backside bulb whereas LED’s emit light in one direction and it is transformed into various beam angles by using a lens. Thus LED lighting of low wattage easily replaces the high wattage traditional lighting schemes. This, however saves a huge amount of electricity, which is why LED roadway lighting is preferred. Other than this LED lights have another advantage that they are turned on instantly. Moreover they don’t attract much insects which block the light. Also they provide a much clear vision to driver on road at a long distance. There are many countries which are using LED street lights including Pakistan, New Zealand, Canada, Hungary,Malaysia, Mexico etc.
